Complex dynamics and the Ahlfors theory of covering surfaces

The Ahlfors theory of covering surfaces has become an important tool in complex dynamics. We describe the basic results of this theory, indicating a (fairly new) method of proof. We then discuss a variety of applications to complex dynamics. This includes questions concerning the existence of periodic points, the Hausdorff dimension of Julia sets, connectivity properties of Julia sets, or topological entropy.
