Abstract: We will discuss Eremenko’s conjecture on escaping points of transcendental maps: these are points that converge to infinity under iteration. His conjecture was that every connected component is unbounded and, stronger yet, that every path component terminates at infinity. (In fact, this question was even asked by Fatou some 100+ years ago). This conjecture was disproved in general, but established for a large class of maps, in a recent paper by two of my graduate students (Guenter Rottenfusser, Johannes Rueckert) in collaboration with me and a colleague in the UK (and published in the Annals). We discuss this result and some of the fundamental techniques in its proof.
