International Mathematical
Summer School for Students

Information for Participants

Location

Jacobs University

The conference is held on the campus of Jacobs University in the Northern German city of Bremen.

Accommodation is provided on campus within five minutes walk of lecture halls, the library, small group study rooms, cafeterias, and recreation facilities. Besides the formal program, the conference aims at maximizing opportunities to meet, discuss, work in small groups, or just relax.

Arriving by train

Ask for a connection to Bremen-Schönebeck, a suburban railway station within five minutes walk from campus. Trains from main station to Bremen-Schönebeck run every 30 minutes, leaving main station at 11 and 41 minutes past each hour from platform 5 or 6.

[www.bahn.de Anreisebutton]

Should you end up at Bremen main station without a through ticket to Bremen-Schönebeck, you must buy a ticket at one of the ticket machines in the station. You cannot buy tickets on the train. Get a Tarif Zone II ("Preisstufe II") ticket at €2.90. You may have to validate the ticket by time-stamping it in one of the little blue boxes on the station platform.

When you arrive at Bremen-Schönebeck, take the stairs up the bridge, cross the bridge and follow the road (which turns into Bruno-Bürgel-Straße). You will reach the Jacobs main gate (B in map below) after approximately 500m.

Arriving by air

Bremen Airport is located close to the city center. As a hub of Ryan Air, it offers convenient direct flights to many European destinations, as well as generally good international connections via Frankfurt, Paris, or Amsterdam.

Arriving at the airport, take Tram 6 up to Bremen Hauptbahnhof (main station), then a local train in the direction of Bremen-Vegesack (these trains leave at 11 and 41 minutes past every hour from platform 5 or 6). Get off at Bremen-Schönebeck for a five minute walk to campus. There is a ticket machine on the tram which takes Euro coins, get a Tarif Zone II ("Preisstufe II") ticket at €2.90 which is valid all the way to Bremen-Schönebeck. Total travel time from Bremen Airport to Jacobs University is approximately one hour.

It is worth checking for convenient connections to Hamburg or Hannover as well. Both airports have train connections to Bremen within two hours travel time. Intercontinental travelers may want to check for cheaper direct flights into Amsterdam or Frankfurt. Train travel to Bremen takes about five hours, see information on Arriving by Train above.

Travel Dates

Arrival and departure

Arrival day is 2 July; first meal served is dinner. Departure day is 12 July; last meal served is breakfast. The program starts on 3 July in the morning and ends on 11 July in the evening with a farewell party.

All participants are expected to arrive on 2 July and stay throughout the entire duration of the school until 12 July.

Early arrival

In exceptional cases, if this significantly lowers the ticket price, we will be able to find accommodation for participants arriving on 1 July, at their own expense (the detailed cost is not known yet; it will be less than €50 including full board).

Traveling to the IMO

We will also be able to find accommodation for participants that are contestants at the IMO in Amsterdam, so they can take a convenient train ride from Bremen to Amsterdam. The conditions will be communicated individually to interested participants.

Please note that these extended stays are not an official part of the summer school, so we can not assume any responsibility of any kind.

Participation Agreement and Parental Consent Form

All participants are required to read and sign the Participation Agreement. Participants under the age of 18 must also have the parents or legal guardians sign the Parental Consent section on this form.
